Random things I noticed about England

I just got back from a 19 day trip to London, and I wrote this on the airplane….just some Random things I noticed about England

Everything in London costs exactly the same as in America…so a beer is £4, a typical breakfast is £5, and a dinner is £10. However…due to the exchange rate, everything becomes exactly double the price.

However, tax and tip are included in everything you buy. So 8% tax + 15% tip, makes London really only 27% more expensive. But that really only applies to food, everything else really is double.

Apartments however, are four times as expensive. And rent is due weekly instead of monthly. Makes sense when some people in London pay $1,500 a week for a 1 bedroom flat. $6,000 a month for a small shitty apartment…can you imagine that?

London has one thing that is more technologically advanced. Their washing machines. I always thought that it would be cool to have a combined washer/dryer in one, so you don’t have to move it to the other machine afterwards. It works, and works great, but is freaking tiny!

All mechanical consumer goods in London are smaller. No one has a full sized fridge…every apartment I’ve been to has a mini-fridge and no ice.

People here use ice sparingly. Since refills aren’t free, people get pissed if their drink comes with too much ice…since they feel like they just spent £5 or $10 on a cup of tap water. Ironically, people here often order a large bottled water for £5 with their meals anyways.

London is the only city as busy as New York. There are people and cars everywhere at all hours of the day.

London is a city in the city of Westminster, and they are the same place. I still don’t understand this one.

If you go to London, buy an oyster card for £3 to use in the tube (subway) and on the city buses.

Buy a pay as you go phone from Orange mobile (£10) or buy the new Skype phone by 3 networks for £40. I am soooo buying this when it comes out in the US by the way.

Indian food is the most popular cuisine in London for some odd reason…more popular than Fish & Chips even.

To get the best currency exchange rate, don’t do it at the airport. Do it at a small shop and look around for rates, it’s a pretty big difference.

McDonalds Pick Up =)

London girls and pick up.

As I’ve traveled the world, I’ve realized that people are people, and pick up works everywhere. However, there are small, subtle tweaks.

In America, it is better to be spontaneous, and start up conversations with strangers without pre-meditation.

In London, it is better to really ground your approach. The way you do this is by explaining throughly the reasons why you are talking to her before asking an opinion or telling a story.

Examples:

America: *Pretend to randomly notice her, and ask “Hey are the fish and chips any good here?”
This works because it is random and spontaneous, she knows you’re not hitting on her.

London: *Look at her, smile, wait a moment, tap her lightly on the shoulder, smile again, and say “Pardon me…I’m really sorry for bothering you as I can see you are eating, but, I noticed you are having fish and chips, and I’m having a mental debate on what to order. May I ask, if the fish & chips are any good here?”
This works because in London you need to properly ground your opener or people will think you’re either A. weird, B. rude, or C. hitting on her.

Girls in London seem a lot more insecure than American girls. It could be for the following reasons:

1.The legal drinking and clubbing age is 18, which means a lot of girls you’ll meet in clubs and bars are young.
2.Because it is such a big city with so many people, girls often feel insignificant.
3.American influence is everywhere, on TV, magazines, etc…and British girls are starting to try to look more like hot American girls by trying to get tans, fake tits, and bleached blonde hair. The TV show, the OC and the Hills are huge here.
4.Because it is always cold in London, girls are always bundled up, which means, they are pale, and not as fit. Most girls here are flabby, even if they are skinny. Gyms, tanning salons, running, and exercise are not common place in London.

Good things about British girls:

The messed up teeth syndrome has disappeared this generation…London is starting to have more dentists and people are starting to care about their teeth more.

They are very quirky and witty, which is a fun, smart attribute.

They are generally more modest than American girls and are really easy to connect with after you get to know them.

I love their British Accents.

Bad things about British girls:

They’re not as hot. They generally don’t take care of themselves as much as American girls.

They’re not as in shape, very few girls here actually go to the gym.

They are pale and pasty white.

They are very insecure, and un-trusting.

Final thoughts:

I’m going to miss London. I’m on the plane as I’m typing this, looking out at the wing of the jet…and at the blue sky knowing that I’ve going home with an experience I’ll never forget. If nothing else…being part of the pick up community has given me the courage, ambition, and opportunity to travel. I’ll never regret picking this life choice, as it has allowed me to meet wonderful people I never would have other wise, and seen places that I never imagined. Will I ever move to London? Definite no. But will I be seeing my new found friends from London again? That is a definite yes.
